YOUNG GUN OF WINE – Deep Dive: Australia’s Best Montepulciano

2025 Mallee Estate ‘Kãti Ãllo’ Montepulciano, Riverland $30 RRP

Greco and Cecchini included this wine in their top six wines of the day. Greco declared “fun! This was the plot twist of the tasting. If I had been told that this was a Pinot Noir, in all sincerity, I might have nodded along. Bright aromas of wild strawberry, tart red cherry and cranberry, together with notes of fresh rose petals and a light, earthy touch of leather. High acidity with soft tannins, lively and silky, with those juicy red fruits allowing space for darker notes of pomegranate, darker cherry and plum. It still has the classic generosity of montepulciano, but is a bit lighter and more elegant. Such a versatile wine – veal, either roasted or scaloppine, poultry, or even risotto with truffles. I would dare fish even: some grilled trout or Murray Cod would work without any doubt.” Cecchini noted “strawberry ice cream on the nose, savoury creamy and soft on the palate, sitting elegantly on the mouth with a nice aftertaste of coffee and chocolate that leaves the palate smooth and clean. A juicy and bright wine to drink now rather than later.”
