YOUNG GUN OF WINE – Deep Dive: Australia’s Best Tempranillo

2024 Mallee Estate Tempranillo, Riverland $16 RRP

Burns included this wine in his top six wines of the day, describing “this punchy-yet-refreshing wine is a joy to drink. Lots of juicy ripe berry fruit and dark cherries, combined with lots of sweet baking spice. Such amazing concentration in this wine, and all the flavours just work so beautifully well together from start to finish. The tannins are like silk. I think this wine would be amazing with many different styles of Asian cuisine – as it’s unlikely to be overshadowed by any rich or spicy dishes.”

Richardson selected this wine among his top six picks from the blind tasting, describing “a luminous, seductive tempranillo with compote strawberry, bright blue fruits and a mouthfeel that glides. This is the most immediately charming of the group – but it’s far from simple. The fruit is vivid and plush without being overblown, carried by fine, smooth tannins that give the wine polish and length. There is a silky confidence to the palate – bright, supple and effortlessly drinkable – with just enough savoury tension to keep it grounded. A sleek, modern expression that feels generous, stylish and highly accomplished. It’s pure pleasure, but with structure underneath the velvet.”
